Symptoms of Acute Intermittent Porphyria

Figure 7. The possible symptoms of AIP

The signs and symptoms of AIP include continuously unexplained abdominal pain and muscle weakness. Both of them are the most common symptoms which largely affect the AIP patients' daily activities. According to a research, 85-95% of AIP patients suffer from abdominal pain (New, Hsu, & Wu, 2016). Besides, frequently feeling nausea accompanied with vomiting (Avola et al., 2016) and the presence of atypical coloured urine, specifically red or brown (Cuquemelle et al., 2012) are also the visible symptoms that can be observed in AIP patients. Furthermore, there are also other symptoms that are common to all people with AIP, for example, constipation (Avola et al., 2016; Cuquemelle et al., 2012) and mental disturbance (Grosios, 2014).
